Reading a book with your toddler

“If you are going to get anywhere in life you have to read a lot of books.” – Roald Dahl, author of “Charlie and the Chocolate factory.”

What can be a better time for being exposed to reading than in early childhood? None, I guess.

Reading a book along with your toddler is certainly a great way to bond with him. There are multiple benefits of this activity. You are getting him familiar with sounds, words, language, print and the value and joy of books. This helps in building his early literacy skills and helps him develop good reading skills later on in life. It also stimulates his imagination and helps him learn about the world around him. Also, there is no more important activity for preparing your child to succeed as a reader than reading aloud together.

Your toddler has a very short attention span but with this activity of reading a book with him does increase this time. You need to designate the same time daily for this purpose and do not forget to fill your story hour with a variety of books, preferably about his favourite topic, like cars, trucks, princesses, stars, trains, castles, etc. Toddlers usually like lift-the-flap and pop-up books. Be consistent, be patient, allow him to turn the pages, show him the words, talk or sing about the pictures, make the story come alive and watch the magic of this ritual work.

We can help our children find the tools they need to succeed in life. Having access to information through the printed word is an absolute necessity. Knowledge is power, and books are full of it, but reading is more than just a practical tool. Through books, we can enrich our minds; we can also relax and enjoy some precious leisure moments.

Our goal is to motivate children to want to read so they will practice reading independently and, thus, become fluent readers. That happens when children enjoy reading. We ADVERTISE! And we advertise by reading great stories and poems to children.
